S+S Gastro Grub is nothing without Simone and Sebastian and their obsession with creating, serving, and—most of all—eating amazing food.
S+S Gastro Grub Catering is an San Francisco Bay area-based catering company specializing in modern interpretations of classic comfort food, as well as mobile whole animal roasts (whole pig, whole lamb, whole goat, etc.), custom paellas & raw bars.
Think gumbo potpie, Guinness stew potpie, mac and cheese with cold smoked pasta with a surprise hickory kick at the end, mobile charcoal-fired Dutch oven on wheels to roast a succulent whole pig, lamb or goat. Inspired by local farmers’ markets and sourcing local ingredients within 150-mile radius. We are committed to using all-natural local, sustainable and organic ingredients whenever possible.
Simone grew up in Hong Kong surrounded by a thriving and diverse collection of food from around the world. Trips to local markets and butcher shops with her parents after school—picking out fresh produce, as well as fish and meat for dinner—were an almost daily ritual the enforced the belief that fresh local ingredients are key to a healthy lifestyle. Freezers were only for ice cubes on hot summer days for her favorite treat, a real Coke with fresh lemon.
As a child, Simone watched as her parents and grandparents cooked family meals and was always curious and asking questions (what kid doesn’t incessantly ask “why?”). She started cooking at age 6, along with her younger sister, to assist their working parents. She also frequently visited Hong Kong’s assortment of cafes, restaurants, and street food vendors, relishing the opportunity to watch food prepared before her eyes.
Roasted suckling pigs are traditional for celebrating milestones such as weddings, birthdays, and business openings, and Simone and her family enjoyed eating whole animals, including pigs, geese, ducks, fish, and chicken.
Simone left Hong Kong to go to school in England and Australia, which helped expand her culinary palette. She loves going on culinary research trips for food experiences that inspire new and exciting dishes. A San Francisco Bay Area resident for more than 20 years, Simone has an excellent grasp of local food culture, and her love of global cuisines fuels her passion for S+S Gastro Grub.
Sebastian’s culinary journey started out of necessity at age of 6 while living in war-torn Nicaragua. Food was very scarce, and he and his grandmother often had to be extremely creative with very few products in order to make food last for the week. During this time, he also fell in love with open-flame cooking in nothing more than stoves built out of simple clay, bricks, and a large piece of steel that was used as both a plancha and a grill. Sebastian learned how to tend to a fire, watch it grow, and nurture it to make their food.
Later immigrating to Mexico and ultimately the United States, Sebastian took other paths and eventually landed in the tech industry but was never really satisfied. His hunger to learn more cooking techniques and experience food from other cultures only grew more and more as he ate his way around the world. He then decided with his partner Simone to start having large events for friends, hosting dinners, hosting fundraisers for local non-profit organizations, and eventually these events led them to start S+S Gastro Grub.
Today, Sebastian pulls inspiration from many of his heritage countries, including Spain, Nicaragua, and Honduras, to develop dishes that combine his fascination for modern gastronomy with his primal roots of cooking with fire.
